If you have never been to the NC State Fair, it can feel like a lot: 11 days, nearly a million people, a giant midway, livestock barns, and more fair food than you could eat in a week. Here is how to plan a great first visit in 2026, from what to wear to the mistakes most first timers make.
First timer checklist
- Buy tickets by Oct. 15 to save, or use a free admission option.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring layers.
- Bring cash, a phone charger, and water.
- Be inside the gates by 9:45 p.m.
- Check the special days. One might get you in free.
When to go and when to arrive
The fair runs Oct. 15 to 25, 2026. Gates open at 9 a.m. most days and at noon on opening day. Weekday mornings are the least crowded, while Friday and Saturday nights tend to be the busiest. Arriving close to opening gives you shorter lines for food and rides, and the evening brings the lights, cooler air, and the Patriotic Light Show near Kiddieland every hour from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
| Day | Gates | Midway rides | Exhibit halls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu. Oct. 15 (opening day) | Noon to 11 p.m. | Noon to 11 p.m. | Noon to 9:45 p.m. |
| Fri. and Sat. (Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24) | 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. |
| Sun. through Thu. (Oct. 18 to 22) and Sun. Oct. 25 | 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. |
What to wear
- Comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot, much of it on pavement.
- Layers. October afternoons can be warm and evenings get cool.
- A rain jacket if the forecast is iffy. The fair runs rain or shine and does not give refunds.
What to bring
- Cash. The fair is not cashless, the lunch pass is cash only, and some kids' games are cash only. There are ATMs inside.
- A portable phone charger for photos and the official Food and Ride Finder map.
- Water and snacks. Outside food and nonalcoholic drinks are allowed, including sealed water bottles and empty reusable bottles.
- A clear bag if you have one. It is not required, but clear bags go through a faster security line.
Leave at home: glass, alcohol, hard sided or rolling coolers, weapons of any kind (including knives and pepper spray), drones, bikes, scooters, and pets. Service dogs are welcome. See the full list on the fair's guest safety page.
How tickets work
| Ticket | Advance (through Oct. 15) | At the fair (Oct. 16 to 25) |
|---|---|---|
| Adults 13 to 64 | $10 | $13 |
| Kids 6 to 12 | $5 | $7 |
| Kids 5 and under | Free | Free |
| Seniors 65 and up | $5 | $5 |
Buy online by Oct. 15 to get the advance price, or pay at the gate. Kids 5 and under are always free. Our money saving guide covers every free admission option, including the weekday lunch pass and Hunger Relief Day.
How ride wristbands work
Rides are not included with admission. You can buy credits ($1 each at the fair, or $10 for 18 in advance) or an unlimited ride wristband ($30 in advance, $40 at the fair, plus a $2 RFID fee). A wristband is good for one day, and ride staff must put it on the rider at a Ride Redemption Tent. Look for the neon green star tents near Gates 7, 8, and 9 and in front of Dorton Arena.
Wristbands do not cover the State Fair Flyer sky ride, the America 250 Wheel, or Casey's Big Slide. Kids under 40 inches ride slides and carousels free with a paying adult 16 or older.
How much to budget
Admission is $10 to $13 for an adult. Add a wristband ($32 to $42 with the fee) if you plan to ride a lot, and set a food budget you are comfortable with. A budget day can cost nothing but food if you use the lunch pass or a free special day and park for free. See sample budgets in our money saving guide.
Where to park
Official parking is free, and there are free park and ride lots with shuttles. You can also take the train right to Gate 1. Details are in our parking and transportation guide.
Best things to see on your first visit
- The America 250 Wheel, new for 2026. At 230 feet tall with 45 gondolas, it is billed as the largest portable observation wheel in the world.
- The State Fair Flyer, a sky ride over the midway with some of the best views of the fair.
- Village of Yesteryear, celebrating 75 years of traditional crafts, now in the air conditioned Holshouser Building.
- The giant pumpkin and giant watermelon in the Expo Center, with a photo spot nearby.
- The livestock barns and the Children's Barnyard.
- Free shows around the grounds and more than 60 Homegrown Music Fest sets.
- The new foods. There are more than 80 this year. Start with our NC State Fair food guide.
How to find your way around
The fairgrounds are big, so note which gate you came in and drop a pin where you parked. Gate numbers are the easiest meeting points if your group splits up. Use the official Food and Ride Finder to locate food, rides, and restrooms. Family restrooms are in the Martin and Agri Supply Expo buildings, and mothers' rooms are in the Scott, Martin, Agri Supply Expo, and new Midway Events Center buildings.
Common first timer mistakes
- Waiting too long to buy tickets. Advance prices end Oct. 15.
- Buying a wristband without checking exclusions. It does not cover the Flyer, the wheel, or the big slide.
- Paying for parking you do not need. Official parking is free.
- Showing up after 9:45 p.m. You have to be inside by then, with no reentry after.
- Missing a free day. Check Senior Citizens' Day, Military Appreciation Day, and Hunger Relief Day.
- Forgetting cash. Lines move faster with it, and the lunch pass requires it.
